Strange World…

“It’s a strange, strange world we live in, Master Jack!”

Many a South African of a certain age and older will remember these words… yep, you have to be well past a few major milestones in life to have a clue what I’m on about. Well, not always the case… maybe a few of the younger clan listen to their parents records… or, even their grandparents big 12 inch vinyls…

“It’s a strange, strange world we live in, Master Jack!”

The line has been doing the rounds along the little lanes and hedgerows of my over-active mind… the backstreets… even the odd link road gets the occasional look-in too…

“It’s a strange, strange world we live in, Master Jack!”

I do a bit of research and realise more than a few South Africans of a certain age could remember this line… it was an international number one… hit the top spot in quite a few countries… even got to number 8 in the US of A. Some feat for a group out of the dark ages from the African continent.

Then I pick up another triviality about the song… apparently it was completed on the day Verwoerd was assassinated in the SA parliament. The date given on the official website of the group, The Four Jacks and a Jill, triggers another thought… it’s an important date in our household. Senior son was born on that day… some years later.

That takes my mind in another direction… last year on this day, at the request of a UK-based publisher, I submitted my hastily completed novel… now, I’m still waiting for word. May they eventually catch up with their backlog and give me that all important call… I dream… no, I don’t… another publisher has requested the book… must be something of worth in my scribbles. I hope… that’s a step better than dreaming… or is it?

“It’s a strange, strange world we live in, Master Jack!”

Yes, it sure is! Today we celebrate the birth of Senior Son… today he gets to the important milestone… he can now vote… he can now walk into the offie and buy a pint or two… no longer will he be seen as a boy… at over six-foot though I doubt he has been seen as a boy for a while!

To you my son!! You go get a great future for yourself! You go challenge the difficulties of life… you go WIN! You have already learned from adversity… you have become stronger. You have learned to challenge the seemingly insurmountable at a young age. You don’t need to stand back for any obstacle life throws at you!

“It’s a strange, strange world we live in, Master Jack!”

Yes… it is a strange world we live in… but then, I think you can cope well with the strange little oddities life will throw at you. Enjoy your day! May this year be a stepping stone to your dreams!

God Bless and keep you!

We thought senior son would have played his last game the previous weekend… not so, he was invited by the seconds to play for them… at his favorite away venue! How could  he refuse? He enjoyed the day… top scoring with a 48 not out… and taking 2 wickets in his 9 overs. His Pappy was happy… chasing photos for his birthday post. The quality is slightly off… my little job has difficulty zooming at those distances…

PS – For all my North American friends… I’ll have to start educating you about the best game on earth! Where do I start? Cricket is a game played by two opposing teams of 11 😉 …

I’ll leave it there for now…

Happy Birthday to your son. A milestone indeed and so much life to look forward to.

Would like to know about this mysterious game of cricket. (Which I thought was an insect that makes a clicking noise by rubbing its hind legs together.)

As for the cricket… yes, we do get insects as well… but the game is what it’s all about. I’m surprised you weren’t dragged to a game while in SA… you missed something worthwile!! Like BBQs and good red wine… cricket warms the heart! 😉 and is good for the soul!! :-P… now I’m pushing it a little…

Two Jacks and a Jill is a little before my time. As for educating the North Americans on cricket, go for it.

We have to work of those folk… teach them the true meaning of life! As for the 4Js&aJ… I forgot to mention in the post… they’re still touring… got concerts in London in October!
