Between

Your future… my past
My past your future?
Our future… our past…

Your pain… my joy
Your joy, my anguish
Our anguish and joy between the tears

My memories your gaps
Gaps in reason, gaps in thought
Your memory my loss… no gain this time

Entwined, entangled… our past pain and pleasure
Relief, joy… remembered along the walk of life
Gone, forgotten… hurt and sorrow attacks

Lessons learned, now forgotten
Every day a few words here… a few thoughts there
Short circuits of the neurons?

Bliss of ignorance
Ignorance of bliss
Which should it be?

Why should it be?
Your mind has shaped mine,
Now mine can’t help reshape yours

Between the shadows and the light
Between the day and the endless night
Between the peace or the senseless fight

The past or the present?
The future of the past past‘s future…
Where do we go from here?

Between the sorrow of the mind’s going lay the joys of the past
Between the joy of learning now dies the pain of the future
Once strong, mind and body powerful… now you’re blessedly serene!

Now you’re innocently at peace
The flow of distant memories washes over you like soft summer rain
Cleansing the hurt… bringing new joy between the torrents and strain

Go in peace friend
Go in the harmony of your endless faith
Your soul will reap the rewards of a life of learning and joyous peace!

Between now and then... what happens... between then and now?

This poem was written in response to Danielle Hark’s challenge this week. Why the words? Danielle speaks of the struggle with mental illness. This week I came face to face with Alzheimer’s for the first time in my life. The poem is dedicated to a person who is visiting at the moment… a person who played a major part during my formative years. We did not know until Wednesday morning, when we collected the folk at the airport, of the onset of the illness.

The photo was taken yesterday afternoon at Trim Castle… one can only wonder about the blurring of the lines between the past and the future… we all have to step through the portal at some point!

Great picture, not great for the alzheimer’s. Be strong for your friend. Try to smile and sing in his presence he needs it more than sadness or pity. 🙂

You are so right!! Yes, we got on just fine during their stay. We all realised very soon to act as if nothing had changed and only do any correcting or reminding in the most suitably gentle ways…

Thank you… I found the image of the old gate caught the moment so well… we all need to pass through different challenges at times in our lives.

Your poem is a very apt way of defining this illness. I hope your friend finds their way through with peace and harmony.

His strong faith plays a great part in aiding with the ills of the disease… peace and harmony seemed so apt when summing up the general mood.
