Rail Disaster Of The Past

Some time in March I went walk-about along the Wicklow coastline. To be more precise, I walked the Greystones to Bray cliff walk. A pleasant 8 kilometers or so walk from station to station. Closer to Bray I noticed something odd about the railway line. At a point along Bray Head there appears to be two tunnels. Well, actually, there are two tunnels.

Further research pointed to a rail disaster on the 9th of August 1867 when the wooden viaduct collapsed, resulting in the death of two people. I’ve found a few rather interesting pieces about the disaster so if you’d like to read the report of the inspector regarding the accident then do click here… if you’d like to read a modern version (with a great sketch attached) then click here

The rail tunnels on the Bray Head... Co Wicklow, Ireland...

The two rail tunnels along the Bray to Greystones section of the line… the one on the right is the disused one…

Great shot, you must have had a bit of a climb to get that view.

Hi Joan, do you see the fence above the train? That’s the path and I was standing a few hundred meter’s south of the tunnels… it’s a very pleasant walk, you’ll enjoy it! Our 4 year old grandson and his six year old brother did the whole walk in the summer holiday… with their other grand pa!! 😉

I look forward to doing it sometime when I am up in the big smoke again!

You must… get yourself a day rambler train ticket for 11 yo-yo’s something… catch the train to Greystones and walk to Bray… catch the train to Howth or wherever… well worth the effort!! Have fun!! 😉
