There are joys that only summer can bring. Every season has it’s own pleasures but it’s hard to argue against the spring and summer joys. Because we’ve had such a mild winter I have seen the odd bumblebee but you’ll have to agree… seeing them in summer is so much better!
Lovely – looking forward to getting the bees back (we haven’t seen any here in the west since November)

Last Thursday we were in Naas, also a bright day. I went walk about and found a spot of planted heather… there must have been at least 10 bumblebees busily working away.

That is fascinating! Just shows how mild it is.

Scary really… then we had a real hard frost last night… so, how much of the new growth will survive? 😉

I happened to mention to a friend who works at the National Biodiversity Centre about your sighting of the ten bumbles in Nass and he was wondering if you by any chance took a photo? He’d love to know which species – he thinks probably Buff-tailed as these are one of the earliest to appear in the spring but it would be good to have that confirmed.

I have a few photos… buff-tailed is what crossed my mind. I have a feeling there may have been one darker tailed one as well. I’ll check the photos in the next few minutes… 😉
