April A to Z – Night Photography

I’m a rank amateur, self-taught photographer. It’s taken me years to build up a bit of knowledge and kit. I read as much as I can but one day you find a bit of new information and then weeks later when you need that knowledge it’s gone. That is one of my best traits.

So… night photography is a skill or rather, a set of skills, that I’ve taken time to try and acquire. Aperture, shutter speed… ISO, I have learned to use my camera as best I can. Not too long ago I added a 35mm 1.8f lens to my collection. Oh boy… how very useful for night photography! It even allows me to use the camera in auto because it allows so much light in.

A plane flashes through Orion...

But… I’m constantly learning… and then forgetting something that takes me forever to remember when I’m out on a cold, clear night. You’ve got to remember, night photography is often best in winter… mmmmm, you’ve also got to remember, in Ireland we don’t have that many clear days or nights so, when you’re after Orion you must grab every opportunity available!

AJ……..I love the photographs! I’m not surprised about your memory “problems.” A multi-talented individual like yourself has so much to keep in his head; sometimes it’s like computer memory; First In…First out!

Just catching up on my blog readings…….can’t wait to get to “Harry!”

  2. It’s easy to forget what lies beyond our curtains. So many lost opportunities; much more than the usual sunset pictures as you have proved so beautifully right here. Inspirational.

    A bit of A-Z nonsense!

Yes, thank you. Good way of putting it. I will wonder about the curtains now, although, come to think of it… my good lady often gets chipped off with me because I leave them open as long as possible… maybe you’ve pinpointed the reason! 😉

Wonderful night photos, AJ. Love the top one. I’m envious of your talent here, I have so much to learn and to practice.

      Thanks Ruth!
I love trying to get planes or even the ISS going through constellations. Orion being one of the best known so that’s an easy target for me.
Keep at it… you’ll have many hours of fun! 😉

I’ve seen ISS several times but don’t have lense capable of capturing it. My telescope is in a storage unit in London. Must think about getting it to Tassie. Orion is upside down for me know. Still easy to identify but I have to think about Rigel and Betelgeuse.

Give it a go… it’s forsing the camera open for 20 seconds or so… that’s where the fun begins! Many of my star trail pics are taken with my 18 to 55… at a f above 10 and ISO around 1200. Have fun!! Well, down there you’ve got the best of all… the Southern Cross! 😉

  4. These are lovely photographs. Night photography is something I haven’t really mastered. The night sky at 3am in West Cork was stupendous a couple of nights ago. I was outside toilet training our new puppy… don’t ask! So whilst I marvelled at the starry sky, photographing it wasn’t an option. A few years ago I spent ages trying to capture moonlight over the bay where I lived in Fiji. Perhaps I’ll blog about it sometime. 🙂

Puppy training and night photography! Now, there’s a thing! Give it a go… I’d love to live in an area where light pollution is low… like the middle of the Kalahari!! Or, maybe West Cork! 😉

Ek dink jy het ‘n klompie pragtige fotos hier. Fotografie is een kuns wat my heeltemal ontsnap het en tog neem ek soms per ongeluk die mooiste goed af. Auto instelling natuurlik.

I value your 'likes' and comments, even though I don't always reciprocate, I care. Thanks for making the effort! God Bless!!
