The call came at five to twelve… five to midnight. Senior Son and friend were stuck on the beach. Yes, in their wrong minds they’d decided a front-wheel drive had morphed into an all terrain vehicle. That’s what happens when city children never get exposed to the realities of off-road life. Oh well, out of bed was the only option.
I glanced at the phone… temperature, 1 deg C… real feel, minus 4 deg C! Yep… winter was on the way. So, Junior Son grabbed some timbers and we went off to the beach… but not before I remembered to take the camera. Also, I had to promise the good lady that I wouldn’t do anything physical. Why? My back… to put it plainly, is stuffed! That’s what you get from doing house moves!
We soon found the lads… I poked the camera out the window. No, I wasn’t going to get out of the car… far too cold for that lark! And oh boy, dark! Here’s a shot of the lads as seen in the car’s headlight… yes, I know they’re headless… there’s a certain irony in that, don’t you think?
So… while I was sitting there waiting for the men to extricate themselves from the horrors of soft beach sand, two thoughts arrived. Yep, it would be totally pointless to suggest the thoughts dawned… I mean, it was in the dark of night. OK, sorry… back to the epiphany moments… it was dark, so… take a few photos of the stars? Yes, why not? I mean… not many hours before Ailsa’s travel challenge had arrived… dark! So… as usual… I wish you well on this Monday… and hope you can see Orion… and a smattering of beach in the car’s headlights!
PS – If you’re wondering, they got out pretty promptly… but not before I reminded them that there is no pill for stupid!
PPS – The red light in the bottom left is not a star, or planet, or plane… it’s a navigation beacon on one of the wind turbines off the coast…
PPPS – Yes, I tweaked the photo slightly, to brighten the stars…

Ah, the joys of parenthood and the silliness of youth. 🙂 Sadly I have to say I’ve been there myself, (bogged that is) though it was many many years ago.

Yes… so have I! But… it was a warm summer’s South African beach and we got ourselves un-bogged! That was part of the fun! 😉

Kids! Oh my heavens how they try us …. we bring them into the world, we nurture them and we teach them well and they can still leave us speachless with their foolhardy ways and we would NOT have them any other way, right? I love the picture of the stars – those little twinklers can never fail to beguile 🙂
