Wildlife Wednesday

This lad is living the wild life! Imagine… arriving at the party in this fancy dress!

A moth caterpillar of note, wouldn’t you say? One afternoon last week, on the way out the gate at work, I spotted a few of these fellows, on the laurel hedge. Now, I believe that laurel is rather resistant to attacks by most animals but I’ll tell you this, these caterpillars were chewing away at the leaves… with seeming relish! The next day, on closer inspection, I noticed the whole length of the hedge was supporting a mass of these creatures. They must surely be enjoying the offerings at the laurel disco for why else would the all pitch up in their fancy dress?

If you’re wondering… WikiP says the species is Vapourer (Orgyia antiqua)

  1. Cool catterpillar, I wouldn’t want to accidentally brush up against that one though it’s armed to the teeth.

And there I was thinking laurel wasn’t good for any wildlife! Well I stand corrected!

Mooi foto, maar dit lyk na ‘n stekelrige besigheid. Ek hoop die mannetjies land versigtig.
