Gosh, this week we’ve been handed a perfect excuse to go over the top with the photos and memories of our hometowns! I’m in the mood for carrying on with this challenge for many weeks! Let e be your tour guide… let me show you where we live. Mind you, we’ve only been locals here for about 15 months but I promise… we’re often out and about to see what the immediate are has to offer!
Arklow has a rich maritime history. Shipbuilding was once a key industry but today it’s more a little ship building industry. However, Arklow boasts the head office of Ireland’s largest shipping company. The Avoca River cuts the town in half so you’d expect to see lots of activity along the river. When a river flows through any town there must be at least one bridge that links the two sides. The Nineteen Arches Bridge is considered Ireland’s longest hand-built bridge. I think I heard somewhere it has the most arches in Ireland, however, don’t quote me, I’ve been known to hear wrong!
So… as I’ve mentioned the river and the bridge, why don’t I throw together a gallery showing activities and events based around the river? Events? Yes… we counted it as an event when on of the shipping company’s own ships stayed over for a few days. We also had a tall ship visiting last year… and a few fireworks displays during the summer festivals…
Thanks for calling around… hope you enjoyed seeing a little of our town. Call back during the next few days, I’ll most likely show you more of what makes it most pleasant to live here!
