Wednesday Wisdom – Save Some… for Whenever!

The following sequence was taken last month… when summer was throwing its last futile wobbles here in the northern hemisphere. We noticed a couple in the car close to us toss out bread and the birds appeared out of nowhere. This is a favourite spot for birds looking for a scavenge… judging by the amount of fast-food litter that always seems to be about, people like bringing their toxins down to the car park… and eat while watching the sea. So… soon we’ll have a population of sick birds here too… but, for now… back to the birds…

I had the camera nearby… as usual, so I started snapping away. I particularly liked getting the contrast of the gull and the crow…

The gull was first to the food… and grabbed… and began eating…

In the meantime, the crow disappeared behind the low wall… and went to work. He/she/ it appeared with a fair feed… definitely more than one piece…

We know it was more than one piece because the bird dropped the pieces on the wall and rearranged them for a better grab before picking them up again…

No… he wasn’t going to eat right there… he was also doing the takeaway thing… another lesson learned from mankind? We left about then too and only 50 or so metres further on we watched the crow land… and promptly began digging holes to hide the food!! Makes you wonder… was he purposely allowing the gull first grab so that he could collect as mush as he wanted, while the gull was otherwise occupied!?

They’re hooded crows… reputed to be intelligent birds…

PS – Happy Hump Day… don’t stress… Christmas isn’t too far away!!

PPS – Also makes you wonder – has the crow learned about saving for a rainy day??

  1. Great pictures! Looks like the crow and the seagull are friends, but I guess that isn’t really the case 🙂

Thanks… no, I’m with you on that one… not friends! I think they would go at each other… but the crows are a whole lot more savvy… so, they take advantage of the gulls’ greed! 😉

Your crows look quite different to our crows. I know you mentioned it was a hooded crow – do you have plain black ones as well?
