Thursday Thought – What IF… Socrates Was RIGHT??

Right so… I won’t bother to place the disclaimer this week. If you should need to familiarise yourself with it, please scroll down to last Thursday’s post…

OK – let me get onto my line of thinking for this week’s post. I watched a video on Socrates. Now, years ago I would not have bothered – simply because I believe each and every person who is supposed to be classified as a philosopher is only one tiny cog in the universe of ideas. So – if you want to follow the ideas of one philosopher you may well be lead wildly astray. However – over time and mainly because of Rainee’s posts on philosophy, I began looking at the said wisdom of these folk in a slightly different light.

What changed my mind? The simple concept that wisdom comes in many forms. Thus, I began looking at so-called philosophers and scholars who shared their ideas. Likewise, many folk throughout history had also shared their ideas… and they weren’t classed as philosophers.

So… if I could appreciate the quotes of others, like Churchill, Langenhoven, Hemingway, King David or St Paul, then surely I could take on board sensible tips of wisdom as shared by the Ancients? There I was… watching a video titled

Socrates: Question EVERYTHING

What? Question everything? YES! Apparently he espoused and founded the Socratic Method. So, for your homework this week, I’ll leave you with the Wiki-P link. This idea/ concept/ method/ philosophy makes sense. YES – don’t believe all the bull you’ve been fed by the mass media and political talking heads – QUESTION EVERYTHING!

Find logical, simple, truthful answers for yourself – don’t believe the lies dressed up as truth. QUESTION EVERYTHING!

Next, I went off to Goodreads – a site I frequent when I want to find quotes by people I’m interested in. Seems our friend Socrates was quite a wise and witty lad, so – I’ll leave you with a few quote attributed to him…

“We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark; the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light.”
― Socrates

“Envy is the ulcer of the soul.”
― Socrates

“Let him who would move the world first move himself.”
― Socrates

“Children nowadays are tyrants. They contradict their parents, gobble their food, and tyrannise their teachers.”
― Socrates

“Strong minds discuss ideas, average minds discuss events, weak minds discuss people.”
― Socrates

Many of his sayings deal with the betterment of the individual. That, I’m afraid, is what is so wrong with modern thinking – the SJW’s all want to fix each and every so-called wrong in this world – yet, they do not first try to fix their own self made messes. Almost without fail mankind is trying to appropriate blame for the past, instead of learning the lessons and by self enrichment, moving forward in society in a positive way! See what the man says about wisdom…

“The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing.”
― Socrates

and… a simple prayer for life…

“I pray Thee, O God, that I may be beautiful within. ”
― Socrates

How about we look at a few about relationships… the man’s wit knew no boundaries…

“Be nicer than necessary to everyone you meet. Everyone is fighting some kind of battle.”
― Socrates

“By all means marry; if you get a good wife, you’ll become happy; if you get a bad one, you’ll become a philosopher.”
― Socrates

“Once made equal to man, woman becomes his superior.”
― Socrates

OK… I’d better stop. Before I do so, it was fun wading through the thoughts of Socrates. I find so many ideas that are mirrored in biblical texts. Yes, turn the other cheek – begin by finding the beam in your own eye before pointing out the splinter in someone else’s… and so forth. OK.. a few more… I mean, as the man says himself…

“I cannot teach anybody anything. I can only make them think”
― Socrates

“Do not do to others what angers you if done to you by others.”
― Socrates

“It is better to change an opinion than to persist in a wrong one.”
― Socrates

Truth… to be found by questioning oneself – and others. Truth – it can only be found in the light of wisdom, not in the dark of corruption and lies. Truth – it is eternal – if you search you will find – if you want to burn every idea then you will torch your own soul… you will seer you own conscience – that is for sure!

“I know you won’t believe me, but the highest form of Human Excellence is to question oneself and others.”
― Socrates

I’ll leave you with the Biographics video… enjoy!

Wow Vossie – I never thought I would see you do a philosophical post! I thoroughly enjoyed it as you would expect. I loved the quotes, especially “The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing.”
